Planning For Field Experience Assignment Instructions
Overview
You will use the Planning for Field Experience Template to complete this assignment. In the template you will identify and discuss the following components:
1. Your plan for completing the hours required for Generalist field experience.
2. Your plan for completing the hours required for Advanced Generalist field experience.
3. A list of five agencies in your area that you could consider for hosting your field experience.
As you continue in the MSW program, our hope is that you would be aware of and planning for the required field experiences. Any questions regarding field experience may be directed to our Field Team at [email protected], where we will be glad to meet with you or answer any questions specific to your circumstances.
*The posting or utilizing of resources from non-approved, external resources (i.e., Course Hero, Quizlett, etc.) is considered academic misconduct. The Honor Codes of the university would consider posting course work online as aiding in academic misconduct, and using resources/sites like these would fall under “using unauthorized aids of any kind”.
As our goal is to produce competent social workers who espouse the values of the profession, this type of academic misconduct is a breach of integrity that is not tolerated within this program. If a student is found to have utilized or contributed to resources like these, they will be reported to the University for disciplinary action.  No student who is found with use of such resources will be approved through this current Gate this semester, in addition to the potential for dismissal from the program.

Hi everyone. An introduction to the field enrollment and field experience requirements as part of the MSW program. As part of the MSW program, students will complete 1,000 hours of field experience. This is split between your generalist field experience, which is 400 hours, and your advanced generalist field experience, which is 600 hours. The two required placements correlate with the field experience and seminar courses, which I will provide more information on in the next slide. These courses have a live weekly required seminar on a specific day and time for the entirety of a student’s field placement. For both field placements, students can choose to complete it in one semester or split it across the course of two semesters. Students will complete field enrollment courses the semester before they intend to complete their field experience. In these courses, their proposals will be reviewed according to CSWE and department standards. As I mentioned before, there are two field experiences in the MSW program. Generalist and Advanced Generalist. Students complete the field enrollment course the semester before their proposed field placement. The generalist field enrollment courses are Social Work 544 in B- term and Social Work 545 in D-term advanced Generalist field enrollment is Social Work 664 in B- term and 665 in D-term. Students have the option of completing their field experiences over the course of two semesters, which is our split semester option or during one semester which we refer to as the block semester option. Split semester option for generalist is Social Work 575 & 577. The block option for generalist placement is Social Work 590. Likewise for advanced journalist field, the split option is Social Work 675 & 677 and the block option is social work 690. Student field experiences are reviewed according to (CSWE) Council on Social Work Education and Department standards. There are a few things to keep in mind as you plan ahead for field experience. First, the agency. The agency should provide a social service to an identified population. Tasks. Student tasks should involve experiencing the day to day life of an agency, the development and demonstration of all nine social work competencies, and should be based in social work knowledge, values, and skills. Supervision. Students should receive proper supervision and instruction. There are two roles of supervision for all MSW placements. The first one is called an Agency Task Supervisor, or ATS. This individual is onsite at the agency, signs off on students weekly documentation, and assigns daily tasks. Field instructors or FIs are degreed social workers with a MSW degree from a CSWE accredited institution and have two or more years of postgraduate practice experience. This individual will meet with students on a weekly basis to process their field experience from a social work perspective, The field instructor does not have to be on site at the student’s agency, which means that students are able to do their placements at agencies that do not have degreed social workers on site. Finally, the schedule, the time and duration of the proposed schedule should meet all department policies. Meaning that you would meet the hour requirements for your field experience and would be in placement from the start to the end of the semester. We understand that planning ahead and arranging for field experience can be a daunting process. Please know that our team here at the MSW program is more than happy to help you along the way. While in the field enrollment courses, you’ll be assigned to a designated field advisor will be there to assist you as you’re going through the proposal process. Additionally, there’s a canvas community called the Social Work Field Community that has various instructions and video tutorials related to how to complete forms and other informational resources related to field experience. If you are not currently in this canvas community and would like to be, please e mail us at [email protected] and request to be added.
